Calm Your Mind and Body: Let Go of Anxiety and Return to Steadiness
You finally sit down, but your thoughts keep moving. There is tomorrow to prepare for, a conversation to replay and something you might have forgotten. You would like a quiet moment without having to solve everything first.
Calm Your Mind & Body — Let Go of Anxiety and Return to Steadiness is a complete guided hypnosis recording in our Anxiety & Worry collection. This article offers a few gentle ways to pause, alongside the full session to listen to when you have time to rest.
What does returning to steadiness mean?
For this practice, steadiness means giving yourself room to notice what is happening and choose what comes next. You do not need to empty your mind, feel perfectly relaxed or find an answer to every concern before beginning.
You might simply sit comfortably, notice the support beneath you and allow the next few minutes to be less demanding. If thoughts continue, you have not failed at the exercise. You can notice them and return your attention to something ordinary in the room.
Five gentle ways to make space around worry
1. Begin with your surroundings
Choose a place where you can pause safely. Put down what you are holding, settle into a comfortable position and look around. Notice a colour, a familiar object or the feeling of your feet resting on the floor. Keep your eyes open if that feels more comfortable.
2. Leave your breathing alone for a moment
You do not have to produce an especially deep breath or follow a demanding count. Let your breathing happen naturally. If paying attention to your breathing feels uncomfortable, place your attention on the chair beneath you or a sound nearby instead.
3. Put one concern into words
Try writing one sentence about what is on your mind. Keep it specific: “I need to prepare for tomorrow’s conversation” is easier to work with than a long list of everything that could go wrong.
4. Decide whether there is a useful next step
Ask whether this concern needs a practical action now, a plan for later or simply acknowledgement that you cannot settle it today. A next step could be making a note, asking a question or setting a time to review something.
The NHS Every Mind Matters guide to tackling worries suggests writing concerns down, setting aside a short period for them and distinguishing problems you can act on from hypothetical worries. Its practical exercises are another option to explore.
5. Return to one ordinary activity
After your pause, choose something manageable: make a drink, prepare a meal or finish one small task. You do not need to keep checking whether you feel calm enough. Let the next activity have some of your attention.
