Manage Food Cravings & Feel More in Control: A Gentler Approach
A familiar craving can arrive quickly: you see a packet on the kitchen counter, someone offers you something sweet, or the evening finally becomes quiet and your attention turns to food. Before long, you may find yourself caught between “I want it” and “I shouldn’t.”
Managing food cravings can begin with a little less pressure. You can notice what you want, respond to hunger and enjoy food while giving yourself more room to choose. A craving does not have to become a judgement about your willpower.
When a craving captures your attention
Picture settling onto the sofa after a busy day. You remember something you enjoy eating, and suddenly it seems to occupy most of your attention. Perhaps you are hungry. Perhaps the food is part of a familiar evening routine. You might also be tired or looking forward to a pleasant taste. Several of these can be true together.
Try asking, “What is happening for me just now?” There is no correct answer to produce and no need to prove that your hunger is acceptable. The question simply gives you a chance to notice your experience before adding criticism to it.
A useful aim is flexibility: being able to eat with enjoyment, recognise when you need nourishment, and make a different choice when that is what you prefer. You do not need to eliminate every craving to develop a calmer relationship with food.
A gentle pause you can try
Use this as an occasional reflection when it feels helpful. It is not a test you must pass before eating, and you do not need to postpone a meal or snack to complete it.
- Recognise the urge. Quietly name what you notice: “I would enjoy something sweet,” or “There is a strong pull towards that food.” Keep the description simple.
- Allow some space. Let an ordinary breath come and go. You can acknowledge the desire without arguing with it or demanding that it disappear.
- Release a little pressure. If comfortable, soften your jaw or uncurl your fingers. See whether the thought “I have to decide immediately” can loosen slightly.
- Choose with care. You might eat the food and give yourself time to enjoy it, prepare a more satisfying meal, or recognise that you would also welcome rest or company.
This recognise, allow, release and choose sequence is the Letting Go process explored within our accompanying hypnosis recording. It invites you to ease the struggle around an urge while staying responsive to your needs.
Make everyday eating less demanding
Consider the moments that repeatedly feel difficult. Does a busy day leave little opportunity to eat? Is the kitchen your first chance to stop and rest? Are you trying to make decisions while already exhausted?
Practical care might mean keeping an easy meal available, making space for a proper break, or sitting down with a snack instead of eating while completing another task. Choose one adjustment that would make your day kinder and easier.
If you decide to eat something you have been craving, you can bring a little attention to its flavour and texture. Enjoyment belongs in eating. There is no need to turn each mouthful into an exercise or monitor yourself constantly.
For anyone receiving treatment for binge eating disorder, the NHS treatment guidance describes support with regular meals and snacks and advises against dieting during treatment. Follow your own care plan rather than using a relaxation exercise to override it.
When the craving returns
A familiar urge may come back later that evening or on another day. You can meet it again without deciding that your earlier pause was pointless.
Instead of asking, “Why can’t I get this right?”, try, “What would help now?” Sometimes the answer is food. Sometimes it includes something else as well. The aim is to build trust in your response, with room for ordinary changes in appetite, preference and circumstances.
If a difficult moment leaves you self-critical, the next meal can simply be the next meal. You do not need to earn it or make up for what happened earlier.
Further help and support
Having food cravings does not by itself mean you have an eating disorder. If eating regularly feels out of control, causes significant distress, or involves restriction or compensating behaviours, speak with a qualified healthcare professional. You deserve support before the difficulty becomes more consuming.

Our 34-minute 53-second guided hypnosis recording offers time to settle, release tension and rehearse a calmer response to familiar food cues. Theo’s narration guides you through a peaceful garden and everyday situations in which you can practise responding with awareness and care.
The Letting Go process is woven into the recording. Within the guided experience, you recognise an urge or feeling, allow it some space, release a little of the tension surrounding it and explore a caring next step. The session includes positive suggestions and a gradual return to alertness.
The softly mixed Mystic Dawn (Theta) music provides a gentle background for the narration and quiet pauses. It is part of the listening atmosphere; there is no need to achieve a particular state or make yourself relax in a particular way.
