Public Speaking Confidence: Speak Calmly in Small and Large Groups

Public speaking confidence can begin with a clear opening sentence and one manageable practice. Choose what you want your listeners to understand, say the opening aloud, and leave room for an ordinary pause. You can prepare to communicate without expecting yourself to feel completely calm first.

When being heard starts to feel like being judged

A meeting is moving towards your turn. A presentation is about to begin. Or someone asks you to say a few words at a gathering. You know the subject, yet suddenly your mouth feels dry and the first sentence seems harder to find.

The pressure may come from trying to do several things at once: remember the material, control every sign of nervousness and predict what everyone thinks. A useful starting point is to bring the task back to one purpose: what would you like the people listening to understand?

For a short work update, that might be the progress made and the decision needed. For a speech, it could be one story and why it matters. A clear purpose gives your preparation somewhere to begin.

A small practice before you speak

Try this while preparing somewhere comfortable, with your eyes open and your awareness on your surroundings.

  1. Write one main message. Finish the sentence: “The point I want people to take away is…”
  2. Prepare a simple opening. Say what you are going to cover. Choose words you would actually use in conversation.
  3. Say it aloud. Rehearse the opening and your main points, rather than only reading them silently.
  4. Practise a pause. At the end of the opening, stop briefly before continuing. Let the pause belong to the delivery.

A brief practice with a trusted person can offer a manageable next step. Ask one useful question afterwards, such as whether your main point was clear. Keep practice proportionate to the occasion instead of turning every rehearsal into an examination.

Speaking to small groups and larger audiences

In a small group, prepare one point you would like to contribute. Bring a short note if it helps, and listen for the moment when that contribution fits. You can begin with something straightforward: “There is one thing I would like to add.”

For a larger audience, give your talk a simple route: an opening, a few main points and a closing thought. Use headings or brief prompts that help you find your place. Where possible, become familiar with the room, microphone and presentation equipment beforehand.

If you lose your words, pause and check your next prompt. “Let me return to the main point” can be enough to continue. Rehearse that recovery once, alongside the parts you expect to go smoothly.

Afterwards, choose one thing that communicated well and one useful adjustment for next time. If you tend to replay every moment, read How to Stop Replaying Conversations in Your Head. For meetings and work conversations, explore How to Build Confidence at Work, One Conversation at a Time.
